The MENA VC space attracted a total funding of $1.1Bn across 193 deals, indicating a significant decline of 41% in funding and 64% in the number of deals compared to the same period of the previous year. Analyzing the quarterly breakdown, the second quarter experienced a more pronounced slowdown, exacerbated by reduced activity during Ramadan and two Eids. During Q2, the funding plummeted to the lowest levels since the pandemic summer of Q3'20, reaching $168M across 73 deals. Moreover, the number of deals dropped to a level not seen since Q2 of 2017.
During the first half of 2023, the data also reflected a decrease at the level of the number of investors YoY. Investor participation during the first half of the year dropped significantly, decreasing by 55% compared to the same period of the previous year, with only 159 investors participating as opposed to 353 in the prior year. KSA led at the level of the biggest share of investors in the region with 29% of total investor in H1 2023 up by 12PP compared to 17% in H1 2022. At the same time, Saudi-headquartered investors the likes of STV, AlJazira Capital and Dallah AlBaraka, among others captured seven of the top ten investors by capital deployed in the region in the first half of this year. UAE's Chimera Capital ranked first in capital deployed with $260M.
In a look at the breakdown of investor participation by round-size, MENA-based investors, which previously surpassed international investors while backing early stage startups, have gained a dominant position in participating in startup deals worth $20M and above. Interestingly, eight of the top ten investors by capital deployed in late-stage rounds were based in the MENA-region. Alongside, data reveals that MENA-based investors captured a share of 72% of the investors contributing to $20M+ rounds in the first half of 2023 with 13 out of the 18 investors hailing from MENA geographies.
