MENA Startup Ecosystem in H1 2022 - Key Highlights

• In H1’22, VC funding in MENA increased grew by 46% YoY, as VC investment in MENA neared the $2Bn mark raised by 300 deals. While this accounts for 62% of last year’s record funding, it was mainly driven by Mega Deals ($100M) and larger-sized rounds

• Though the ecosystem observed a 2% YoY incline in total transactions compared to H1’21, MENA-based startups closed 12% fewer deals in H1 2022 than in the second half of last year, driven by a general decline in VC activity over Q2 2022

• Despite investor inclination towards larger-sized rounds in MENA, the lion’s share of transactions (50%) were closed in the $1M- $5M bracket size

• While Saudi Arabia surpasses Egypt in H1’22 to become the second largest market by deals, the top 3 markets maintain their positions by funding with the UAE leading the pack

• Remarkably, Iraq makes its debut in the top 10 MENA-based geographies, observing the highest YoY funding growth to rank 7th in the Top 10
