Despite the many geopolitical challenges and intricate national backdrop, Africa remains an attractive destination for investors. The continent houses some of the largest economies including Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, and South Africa. In 2020, the region was faced with enormous economic challenges with the overall GDP of the country contacting as it tackled the challenges of the pandemic. Despite all the factors, Africa has been making economic reforms especially to attract FDI as it looks to move away from its dependence on extractives. The large population with the majority being under 30 presents a promising opportunity for scalable businesses making impactful changes in industries like FinTech, E-commerce, and Healthcare to grow. The VC ecosystem in the region has been active for quite a while but 2021 was a momentous year as funding in the region grew by more than 200% to near the $3Bn mark.
After the pandemic, the continent is now faced with the challenges of an economic slowdown similar to its peer global emerging markets. But investor participation continues to increase and the $2.9Bn raised over 2022 came through the participation of a record 714 investors. Almost 65% of these investors hailed from outside of the region with USA-based investors at the top. On the other hand, the number of regional investors has been retreating in favor of MENA-based and international investors. However, the Early Stage is where regional investors are the most active with the number almost coming on par with international investors. Some of the most active names at this stage include Egypt's Flat6Labs, and Nigeria-based LoftyInc Capital Management and Future Africa. The region continues to push for investment in the startup ecosystem and has seen Google and Microsoft launch Africa-focused initiatives. Moreover, the continent also introduced the Africa Startup Initiative Program to support local young startups.
An interesting thing to note in the venture capital landscape has been that amid economic challenges, the top 10 investors by estimated capital deployed have each recorded year-on-year growth this year. Tiger Global, Lightrock, and Avenir Growth Capital were amongst the most active capital deployers in the region. A shift in accelerator activity was also observed in 2022. After declining for three consecutive years, accelerated deals have made a comeback to account for almost 30% of the transactions in 2022. International accelerators Tiger Global, Techstars Toronto, and Estonia-based mentorship-driven accelerator program for Early-Stage B2B SaaS, Fintech, Cyber, and Sustainability startups, Startup Wise Guys, were in the top 10 most active investors by deals in 2022.
