The Pakistan-based female-led “build your own games” platform Gaming Revolution for International Development Inc. (GRID) has successfully raised $1.3M in its latest funding round. The oversubscribed SEED round was led by 11 Tribes Ventures and Blockchain Founders Fund and recorded both participation from strategic investors and a Republic equity crowdfunding raise that accumulated about $200K. Founded by Marium Nusrat, the startup aims to democratize content creation through video games. One of their latest projects, currently in development, is a platform called ‘Breshna’ which allows users to create purposeful video games without learning how to code. The term ‘Breshna’ is a Pashto word that means ‘lightening’.
The Pakistani VC ecosystem has observed exceptional funding growth as most recently recorded in our State of Startup Funding- 2022 Emerging Venture Markets. The almost 350% YoY growth in funding signifies a new dawn for the entrepreneurial scene in Pakistan, marked by a keen global and local investor interest. More than 50% of all investors backing Pakistan-based startups in 2021 were international, with entries from international giants like Tiger Global, Kleiner Perkins, Wavemaker Partners, Buckley Ventures, and even the global giant Alibaba Group. While this investment in gaming is positioned as a refreshing endeavor to boost other digital industries of great impact, it was the T&L sector that raised the lion’s share of investments in 2021 as recorded in our 2022 Pakistan Venture Investment Report. Driven by major investments in Airlift, Bookme.pk, and Bykea the T&L sector in Pakistan observed more than 200% YoY growth in funding over the past year.

As of now, the platform has registered over 1100 users with over 3000 video games already developed. The impact that Breshna has made led to its alpha version being ranked as #2 Product of the Day on Product Hunt. In a medium post statement, Marium Nusrat commented, “Breshna operates at the intersection of 3 exploding tech trends; no-code content creation, serious games, and NFTs. Video games are powerful communication tools, but their use has been limited to entertainment due to the cost, skills, and time barriers associated with video game creation. Breshna breaks these barriers and empowers a non-tech audience to create purposeful video games at low cost, with no-code, and at lightning speed. With our investors’ support, we are now poised to build for a world where everyone, irrespective of their coding and design skills, can tell a story through video games.”
The Pakistan-based gaming startup plans on channeling its funding into enhancing the user experience of Breshna to build its momentum and impact on the global gaming community. In light of this platform-boosting investment, Managing Partner at 11 Tribes Mark Phillips concluded, “Mariam and the team have built an organization and culture that is motivated by all the right reasons. Their disciplined operation of the company in such a lean and efficient manner gives investors a high level of confidence knowing that funding will truly be put to good use. Bottom line, Mariam and the team are capitalizing on the intersection of some very significant market trends and we at 11 Tribes Ventures are firm believers that they are onto something big. We’re thrilled to be along for the journey.”
